● Edwin is shown in James Gay’s 1841 census as 9 months old, no relationship shown, and in his 1851 census as 11 years old, as a “visitor”, so presumably he was brought up by James, and was some kind of relation ● he could of course be the illegitimate son of one of James’ daughters, in which case his father “John”, only found in his 1^st marriage certificate, could be an invention ● if John II was not James’ brother, perhaps he was some other relation
