there is speculation that the family were of French origin, possibly even Huguenots, but this is still to be clarified – certainly they seem to have appeared from nowhere and to have quickly populated the Northfleet, Kent area

THE BARDOE FAMILY ABROAD

several members of the Bardoe family emigrated, either to Canada or to Australia – notes will be found against the names of those concerned. Sidney J. Bardoe’s wife and sons lived in Kenya 1949-52, but came back, so perhaps he was only posted temporarily there. There are several Bardoes in the US census 1840-1930, but, with a couple of exceptions, they are shown as all born in the USA, even in the 1850 census, so they must have emigrated there earlier, and MAY not even be related to this family

· the author has checked the images of the baptism records of Cobham, Kent, 1746-80, and these are the only baptisms for Bardoe (spelt variously as Bardoe, Bardow and Berdoe) http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/

· IGI gives another Ann, baptized 9 SEP 1764, but the only Bardoe on the page is Sarah I, unlike the 1766 entry, where both Ann and Mary are listed - the name has at some time been corrected, so it could possibly have been misread as Ann – some researchers have put this Ann in their tree, assuming that she died before 1766, when the real Ann was born

· there is an Ann in the next line, but it is a different family

· the Northfleet marriage images for 1762-96 are missing, so those for the marriages below can’t be found

· a Thomas Burdoe or Bardoe married 25 DEC 1791, St. George, Gravesend, Kent, Mary Kibbel – the image is too unclear to see what the name is exactly, so it might not even be a member of the Bardoe family

· the only Bardoe burial 1762-1800 in Cobham, Kent is that for a George Berdoe, 28 OCT 1773 – as no age is given, this MAY be either George I or George II, or neither of them (many of the records are almost illegible, so there MAY be other Bardoe burials)

· the only Bardoe burial 1763-1812 in Northfleet, Kent is for a Mary Bardo, 14 SEP 1783 – again, as no age is given, this MAY or MAY not be Mary I, assuming the Bardoes had moved to Northfleet

A man named Joseph Bardoe, employed on the [ketch] Waterlily, fell overboard at the wharf at Burketown at 1 a.m. on 26^th instant. The body was recovered at 9 o’clock the same morning. The deceased was an old resident of Normanton, where his widow resides.

We would go up the alley between the two houses until he had put the bike away in the garden. He loved meeting up with his friends for a drink on Sundays, sometimes this made Mum mad. Looking back I suppose it is funny.

We had a pond in the garden I remember having some fish and calling one after my uncle Derek it ended in Sid. My dad would do anything for anyone, but was a very quiet and gentle man. My Nan Harriet used to live with us up until she died in 1968 - later that following year we moved from there to Strood for Mum’s new job”
